Music Program
Cannon Hill state School has a vibrant and growing Music Program. All classes come to Music once a week. The Music specialist is a qualified Orff and Kodaly Music education practitioner.
In the lower years, (prep to year 2) the focus is on laying foundations, playing games, singing songs and learning to name and play small percussion instruments. The Reggio education principle of “Hundred languages" can be seen in the way Visual Art is used as a response to Music, as well as a stimulus for composing Music. All children in year 1 and 2 sing in the Piccoli Voices choir.
In year 3, children start learning to play the xylophones, together with more sophisticated non-melodic percussion (eg drums). The Orff approach allows all children to succeed at playing a part in a class or small group ensemble, and is a wonderful way in to improvising, composing and arranging their own Music. All children in year 3 sing in Raggazzi Voices, the year 3 choir.
Children in year 4 -6 have the opportunity to sing in Show Choir, the school's senior auditioned choir, and children in year 5 and 6 are able to audition for a place in Music Extension. Here they are able to learn more complex pieces, as well as extend their learning by composing their own arrangements of the year 4-6 classroom repertoire. Show Choir and Music Extension, together with the CHSS Band, perform twice a year, at La Mattina Musicale in June, and La Serata Musicale in November. Raggazzi Voices and Piccoli Voices perform once a year, at La Serata Musicale.
