Books

The school office has a range of books on parenting and education, which relate to our teaching and learning approaches, our curriculum, and our policies (such as behaviour management). These books are available for parents and carers to borrow.

Respectful relationships

Our Choose Love and Bridge Builders programs engage students in social and emotional learning, which helps build their leadership and relationship skills. 
These programs share a lot of common ground with the Queensland Government’s recently-released Respectful relationships education program.  
Our staff will be starting to using some of the Respectful relationships terminology in their interactions with students, and parents are encouraged to reinforce this learning informally at home. 
The following list offers suggestions for engaging your child and consolidating their social and emotional learning:
  • Discuss and examine emotions that children demonstrate
  • Encourage and model positive interaction with others
  • Discuss and demonstrate ways to show respect
  • Explore feelings and emotional responses that children demonstrate
  • Encourage working with others and friendly behaviours
  • Discuss what it means to be safe and who can help keep us safe
  • Help children interpret their emotional responses and feelings
  • Model and promote safety and discuss safety planning
  • Model and encourage empathy, acceptance and tolerance of difference
  • Encourage skills in good communication and model good communication
  • Discuss conflict resolution and encourage children to practise it
  • Discuss and practise coping strategies in different situations
  • Explore and celebrate your own and others’ cultures
  • Discuss and practise ways of managing behaviour and relationships
  • Explore different family structures and the benefits of family
  • Discuss and model respectful family relationships
  • Acknowledge and discuss the importance of good mental health
  • Support young people to positively develop their identity and sense of self including developing personal values and ethics
  • Discuss and model safe and ethical online and social media interactions
  • Discuss and model a healthy balance of power in relationships
  • Discuss rights and responsibilities within relationships
  • Model and encourage assertive communication skills
  • Model and encourage ethical decision-making
  • Identify and celebrate when your child’s peers behave respectfully. Discuss how this behaviour contributes to a respectful and safe community
  • Practise and model empathy and ethical decision-making within the community
  • Discuss gender stereotypes and how they position women
  • Demonstrate respectful negotiation within relationships
  • Identify and discuss an imbalance of power in relationships
  • Support young people to regulate their emotions and manage their anger
